No, a chamfer does not have to be 45 degrees they also come in other angles like 7 ,15, 22 1/2 , 30 , 60 degree . The 45 degree is common because it’s easy to manufacture and measure, chamfers are made at other angles depending on design requirements. The angle is based on the way it will be used as in metal working or the look or design of a woodworking project. In my shop I actually use a wide variety of chamfers router bits , some with bearings and some straight shank. Quality is the key to a great outcome.
