Shank diameter is your first choice for stability and compatibility and the size Router you are using. A larger shank diameter (such as 1/2") gives you more rigidity and reduces vibration, which is beneficial for you and gives you smoother, cleaner cuts, especially in heavy-duty work. Smaller shanks (like 1/4") fit compact routers or Palm routers and are suitable for lighter, more detailed work.core box router bit with different machines. In my shop I have both both 1/4" and 1/2" shank diameters, and I use the Amana Tool 45918 with the 1/4" shank for my Palm routers and the Amana Tool 45928 1/2" shank with my Standard or Plunge Routers.This range makes compatibility of my routers perfect and gives me more flexibility to match my tools for the application at hand. Quality is the key to a great running shop with less down time because of having to reorder because of a less expensive bit that failed.
