The piece that holds the drill bit is called the chuck most hand drills today are keyless and don't need a "key " as in years ago. The chuck tightens around the drill bit to keep it securely in place while drilling. Always test run the drill at a slow speed to make sure the drill bit is locked in straight or it will wobble and possibly fly out. Some chucks as in a drill press require a special key to tighten and have a larger drill bit capacity.
