The piece on the router that holds the router bits in place is called the collet. The collet is a cylindrical sleeve that tightens around the shank of the router bit when the collet nut is tightened, securing the bit firmly in the router. Never use the wrong size collet because it will possibly hurt you because the bit will comes flying out at you cause it to stick in you and it will definitely damage your workpiece.
