There are two types of handheld router and they are a Palm type router with a 1/4 inch collet and a Standard or full size router which is used for shaping, trimming, and cutting wood or other materials in larger jobs. It is commonly used to create decorative edges, grooves, and joints in woodworking projects. For versatility the Palm router allows for precise and detailed work on furniture, cabinetry, and other jobs or projects. The Standard Router some times comes with a 1/4 and a 1/2 inch collet , the 1/2 inch is used with larger shanked bits for heavier routing jobs.
