When sanding it depends on how rough the project starts out as so to break the roughness you use a lower grit size sandpaper as in the 60 - 80 grit range for fast removal . When you have it to the point of smooth but still not the smoothness you need ,you then move up the grit size to a 120-220 grit size and then sand to close to your needed finish . It is then that you use your finak grit size which will be between 330 - 430 to get that perfectly smooth finish . The above is done with an Random orbital sander and I use an abrasive cleaning stick to clean the sandpaper and give it a longer life.
