Orbital sanders are called "random" because their sanding pad moves in both a circular (orbital) motion and a random pattern. This random motion prevents the sandpaper from following the same path twice, reducing swirl marks and creating a smoother finish. The random orbit sanders in my shop are the workhorses of finish work with the Hook and Loop connectors I am able to move through the grit size very quickly and produce a great finish to my work.
