Yes, there is a difference between an orbital sander and a random orbital sander. An orbital sander moves the sanding pad in a fixed circular motion, which can sometimes leave visible swirl marks. In contrast, a random orbital sander combines both circular and elliptical motions, greatly minimizing swirl marks and resulting in a smoother, more even finish. In my shop, I have both types, as well as a versatile model that can be switched between orbital and random orbit modes for added flexibility.
