Planing is generally better for quickly removing larger amounts of wood and achieving a flat, even surface, especially when dealing with rough or uneven boards. Sanding, on the other hand, is better for smoothing surfaces and preparing them for finishing. Often, woodworkers use both methods together: planing first, then sanding for the best results. First you plane to get a flat surface and close to the desired thickness then you sand to the finish .
