To cut splines for a miter joint, first cut a groove across the mitered faces of each workpiece using a table saw or a router with a slot-cutting bit. Then, cut thin strips of wood (splines) to fit snugly into the grooves, glue them in place, and trim any excess after the glue dries. This strengthens the miter joint and improves alignment.
