The finishes for wood are polyurethane, varnish, oil, and wax. Varnish and urethane's provides a hard, protective surface; oil penetrates the wood to enhance its natural color; and wax gives a soft, low-sheen finish that is easy to apply. Each finish offers different levels of protection and appearance.
