A straight bit and a mortising bit are both used with routers, but a straight bit is designed for general-purpose cutting, such as making grooves, dados, and rabbets. A mortising bit, on the other hand, has a special design (often with a thicker body and deeper flutes) to efficiently remove more material and produce clean, flat-bottomed mortises for joinery.
