A router bit should be inserted into the collet so that at least 3/4 of the shank is inside, typically leaving about 1/8 inch of the shank exposed. This ensures a secure grip and reduces the risk of the bit slipping during operation. Some companies like Amana Tool have a marked depth on the shaft of the bit so you you don't install it too shallow.
