Cutterhead type greatly affects the smoothness of the finish, noise level, and maintenance needs. Helical and SHELIX heads use multiple small, indexable inserts for quieter operation, superior surface finish, and easier singlre cutter changes compared to traditional straight knives. For example, the Powermatic 1610086K 60HH and JET Black 8 inch Helical-Head Jointer both feature helical heads for a premium finish. Models like the Jet JT9-715100 JPJ-12B use straight knives for those preferring traditional setups. The range of cutterheads allows you to select for budget, noise, finish quality, and ease of maintenance. In my shop I have a Helical head set of cutters and they are great especially because if you happen to chip a single cutter it can be rotated to the next cutter side
( usually there are 4 sides to them). Whereas with the single straight knives you must change the the whole blade because of one small nick to it.
