To properly install a router bit, first unplug the router and insert the bit shank fully into the collet, then pull it out slightly (about 1/8 inch) to prevent binding. Tighten the collet securely with the appropriate wrenches, ensuring the bit is firmly in place before use.Also when you change to another bit always remove the collet and clear any dust build up so it will "seat" correctly with the new bit.
