There are a few different types of planers , first there is the Hand Planer which you run across the wood to flatten the surface of the wood.
Then there is the "Lunchbox "planer which gets it name because it can be carried around , with this planer the wood is sent through and the top side is flattened with repeated passes.
The next one is the Industrial or Heavy Duty planer which works basically the same as a Lunchbox planer but has a bigger motor and heavier frame work and is not mobile.
Last but no least is the Jointer / Planer combo which allow you to Plane one side and Joint the edge side.
Helical head planer are the best option because of the many cutters it has and the ability to change just the damaged one .
