Yes, you can run a 2x4 through a planer to smooth and flatten the surfaces or make it thinner. However, if it is recycled wood as in barnwood or Pallet wood any previously used wood you should check for nails or staples first, and be aware that the rounded edges of most store-bought 2x4s will become square as you remove material.
