Carbide-tipped router bits stay sharp longer than high-speed steel (HSS) bits. This is because carbide is much harder and more wear-resistant, making it better suited for extended use and tougher materials. Many router bits have a special coating added to them to prolong their use and keep them sharp. Forcing or over heating a bit will break down the composition of the bit and shorten its work life.
