Countersink bits are effective in creating a conical hole that allows screws or fasteners to sit flush with or below the surface of a material. Sometimes a dowel or plug will be put in on top of the xxxx to hide it or when a different wood is used in the dowel it's for decorative purposes and improves both the appearance and functionality of the finished product by preventing protruding xxxx heads. Their effectiveness depends on proper xxxx size matching the countersink size.
