Use a **counterbore** when you need a flat-bottomed hole to recess the head of a bolt, xxxx , or fastener so it sits flush with or below the surface. Use a **countersink** when you want to create a conical hole so the head of a xxxx or fastener sits flush with or below the surface, typically for screws with angled heads. Both of them can be followed with a wood plug for decorative purposes of the same wood for concealment or different wood for attraction.
