A countersink bit is used to create a conical hole for the xxxx head to drop into in a material, typically wood, metal, or plastic, so that the head of a xxxx or xxxx head bolt can sit flush with or below the surface. In wood projects the sunken head is usually covered with a wood plug sometime of a different kind of wood and sanded flat for decorative purposes .This helps achieve a smooth finish and prevents the fastener from protruding.
