When inserting a new bit in the router, it should be inserted so that about 3/4 of the shank is inside the collet, leaving approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch of the shank exposed. This ensures a secure grip while preventing the bit from bottoming out, which could cause it to loosen during use.
