To insert a bit into the router's collet, first unplug the router for safety. Loosen the collet with a wrench, insert the shank of the bit (leaving a small gap so it’s not fully bottomed out), and then tighten the collet securely. Make sure the bit is firmly held before use. And when you change to your next bit always remove the collet and clear any wood dust that has accumulated in it.
