A flattening bit is a large-diameter router bit designed specifically for leveling or surfacing the top of a workpiece, such as a slab of wood. A spoilboard bit is also used for surfacing, but it is optimized for cleaning and flattening the spoilboard (the sacrificial surface) of a CNC machine. While both can flatten surfaces, spoilboard bits are typically designed for frequent, heavy-duty use on spoilboards, whereas flattening bits may be used more generally on workpieces.
