A flush trim bit and a pattern bit are similar but not exactly the same. Both have a bearing that guides the cut, but on a flush trim bit, the bearing is typically at the end of the bit, while on a pattern bit, the bearing is usually at the shank (top) of the bit. This difference affects how you position your template when routing. Here is two links for more information on them.
