A pattern router bit and a flush trim bit both have a bearing to guide the cut, but the difference is in the bearing's position. A pattern bit has the bearing on top (closest to the router), while a flush trim bit has the bearing on the bottom (furthest from the router). This affects how you position your template when routing.
