A pattern bit and a flush trim bit are both router bits used for shaping wood, but they differ in bearing placement. A pattern bit has its bearing on top (closer to the shank), while a flush trim bit has the bearing on the bottom (closer to the tip). This difference determines which side of the workpiece you follow with your template.
