To tell if a bit is carbide, look for markings such as "carbide" or "Tungsten Carbide" on the shank or packaging. Carbide bits usually have a silver-gray tip that is brazed onto a steel shank and feel heavier and harder than standard steel bits. If unsure, try using a magnet—carbide is less magnetic than steel.
