If your router can accept both sizes, 1/2-inch router bits are generally better because they are stronger, vibrate less, and produce smoother cuts. However, 1/4-inch bits are useful for small, detailed work or in compact routers that only accept 1/4-inch shanks. Choose 1/2-inch bits whenever possible for most tasks.
