If you work mostly with rough or warped lumber and need flat faces and square edges, buy a jointer first. If your boards are already flat and you mainly need to make them thinner or ensure uniform thickness, a planer is the better first purchase. Ideally, both tools complement each other, but your choice depends on your immediate woodworking needs.
