The choice between a top bearing and bottom bearing router bit depends on your project needs. A top bearing bit is better when following a template placed on top of the work piece, while a bottom bearing bit is ideal when the template is underneath. Neither is universally better; it depends on template placement and routing direction.
Also If you are Flush Trimming a work piece the edge you are using as your guide must be matched to the bearing height for a perfectly trimmed piece.
