Yes, you can plunge with a ball end mill, but it is generally not recommended because it's less efficient than using a flat end mill because the ball shape provides less cutting surface at the tip. The flat end mill is used to hog - out a large amount of wood then the ball end mill is often used for creating contoured surfaces or 3D shapes such as in a bowl or tray.
