Dear Pete,
The direction of chip ejection should be in the same direction as your air flow. Stopped cuts need upcut bits, thru cuts need down.
Upcut bits are designed for cutting wood, plastics, and aluminum, but downcut bits are more appropriate for cutting veneer, laminates, and plywood.
